Physical Education at Holy Trinity

Subject Intent

Physical Education at Holy Trinity aims to nurture active, healthy, and confident learners. We encourage children to be curious by exploring a wide range of sports, skills, and movement opportunities that spark interest and build a love of physical activity. Through engaging teaching, pupils are inspired to challenge themselves, develop resilience, and celebrate their progress as they grow in physical competence and confidence. PE also plays a vital role in helping children feel a sense of belonging, as they learn to work collaboratively, support one another, and demonstrate fairness and respect within team environments.

Curriculum Implementation

Our PE curriculum is sequenced to ensure that pupils develop physical competence and confidence through a clear progression of skills. In the Early Years, children build the foundations of movement through continuous provision that promotes balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and enjoyment of physical activity. As pupils move through Key Stage 1 and into Key Stage 2, these fundamental movement skills are revisited, refined, and applied in increasingly complex contexts. Teaching approaches combine direct instruction, guided discovery, and differentiated challenges so that all learners can achieve and feel successful. We follow a structured scheme and are building a range of equipment suited to different skill levels to support staff in delivering consistent, engaging lessons.

Curriculum Impact

Children demonstrate positive attitudes such as resilience, teamwork, and respect, and show increasing independence and strategic understanding in competitive and cooperative contexts. Regular assessment, including ongoing teacher observation, pupil voice, and performance in lessons and events, shows that children make progress from their individual starting points. Children show a growing understanding of the importance of physical and mental well-being.

Teaching and Learning Approaches and Adaptations

Lessons are planned with adaptive tasks, differentiated equipment, and flexible grouping so that all pupils can access the learning and experience success at their own level. Teachers use targeted support, including individual adjustments and scaffolding challenges, to remove barriers and promote equal opportunities for engagement. We celebrate diverse strengths by valuing personal progress as much as performance, and by creating a positive, supportive environment where pupils feel safe, respected, and confident to take part.

Enrichment and Wider Opportunities

Each year, the school has a sports day which includes all children.  Athletic and agility events take part on a local field and children participate in track and field activities. Children compete in competitions and events in the local area for sports such as football, hockey and indoor athletics.  There are after-school clubs throughout the year which provide children with opportunities to develop skills and try new activities such as dance, laser-tag and zorbing.
