Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Information
The Children and Families Act 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice (2015) set out how children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities are supported in schools. The guidance places pupils and their families at the heart of decision making, ensuring that their views, wishes and aspirations shape the support provided.
Key Principles
-
Children, young people and their families are central. They are actively involved in discussions about the support needed and are invited to contribute their views, expertise and feedback on progress.
-
Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plans are used for pupils with the most complex needs. These plans replace the former Statements of Special Educational Needs and ensure that education, health and care professionals work together to provide coordinated support.
-
A single school-based category of SEN support is used for pupils who require additional help. This replaces the previous School Action and School Action Plus. Support is planned, delivered and reviewed using the Assess–Plan–Do–Review cycle.
All Staffordshire maintained schools follow a consistent approach to identifying and meeting the needs of pupils with SEND. The Local Authority provides support to ensure that all children, regardless of their needs, receive high-quality provision and make the best possible progress. Schools aim to be inclusive, enabling pupils with SEND to learn alongside their peers in a mainstream setting wherever this is appropriate and in line with parental wishes.
