French

At our school, French is taught to all pupils from Year 3 to Year 6. We use Kapow Primary French to provide a clear and progressive curriculum that develops pupils’ knowledge, skills and confidence in learning another language.

Intent

We want our pupils to enjoy learning French and develop the confidence to communicate in another language.

Our aim is to give children strong foundations in French by developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Pupils build their knowledge of vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar as they move through Key Stage 2.

Through learning French, we want pupils to:

  • enjoy learning and using another language;
  • develop confidence in speaking and listening;
  • build and remember an increasing range of French vocabulary;
  • develop accurate pronunciation;
  • read and understand familiar words, phrases and simple texts;
  • write words, phrases and increasingly complete sentences;
  • recognise patterns and basic grammar within the French language;
  • learn about France and the wider French-speaking world;
  • develop positive attitudes towards languages and other cultures.

Our French curriculum prepares pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for the next stage of their language learning.

Implementation

We use Kapow Primary French to support the teaching of French from Year 3 to Year 6. The scheme provides a clear sequence of learning, allowing pupils to build on what they have learned before.

Lessons develop pupils’ knowledge and skills through:

  • speaking and listening – hearing French spoken and practising words, phrases and conversations;
  • phonics and pronunciation – learning how French sounds are pronounced;
  • vocabulary – learning, practising and revisiting important words and phrases;
  • reading – developing from familiar words and phrases towards simple texts;
  • writing – progressing from words and phrases to increasingly complete sentences;
  • grammar – recognising and using basic patterns and structures within the language;
  • culture – developing pupils’ knowledge of France and the wider French-speaking world.

Teachers provide regular opportunities for pupils to revisit and retrieve previous learning so that important vocabulary and knowledge are remembered over time.

Songs, games, conversations, role play, listening activities and other practical activities help make language learning engaging and give pupils plenty of opportunities to practise.

Teachers check pupils’ understanding throughout lessons and adapt teaching and resources where needed so that all pupils can access and participate in the French curriculum.

Impact

By the end of Year 6, we want pupils to have developed a positive attitude towards learning languages and secure foundations for continuing their language learning at secondary school.

Pupils will have developed an increasing ability to:

  • understand and respond to spoken French;
  • speak French with growing confidence;
  • recall and use familiar vocabulary and phrases;
  • use increasingly accurate pronunciation;
  • read and understand simple French;
  • write words, phrases and simple sentences;
  • recognise and use some basic French grammar;
  • make connections between new and previous learning;
  • understand aspects of French and French-speaking cultures.

Most importantly, we want our pupils to leave primary school confident and enthusiastic about learning another language, with the knowledge and skills needed to continue their language journey.
