PE subject leader: Mr Hoskins
Subject Intent
Physical Education at Holy Trinity aims to nurture active, healthy, and confident learners. We encourage children to be curious by exploring a wide range of sports, skills, and movement opportunities that spark interest and build a love of physical activity. Through engaging teaching, pupils are inspired to challenge themselves, develop resilience, and celebrate their progress as they grow in physical competence and confidence. PE also plays a vital role in helping children feel a sense of belonging, as they learn to work collaboratively, support one another, and demonstrate fairness and respect within team environments.
Curriculum Implementation
Our PE curriculum is sequenced to ensure that pupils develop physical competence and confidence through a clear progression of skills. In the Early Years, children build the foundations of movement through continuous provision that promotes balance, coordination, spatial awareness, and enjoyment of physical activity. As pupils move through Key Stage 1 and into Key Stage 2, these fundamental movement skills are revisited, refined, and applied in increasingly complex contexts. Teaching approaches combine direct instruction, guided discovery, and differentiated challenges so that all learners can achieve and feel successful. We follow a structured scheme and are building a range of equipment suited to different skill levels to support staff in delivering consistent, engaging lessons.
Curriculum Impact
Children demonstrate positive attitudes such as resilience, teamwork, and respect, and show increasing independence and strategic understanding in competitive and cooperative contexts. Regular assessment, including ongoing teacher observation, pupil voice, and performance in lessons and events, shows that children make progress from their individual starting points. Children show a growing understanding of the importance of physical and mental well-being.
Teaching and Learning Approaches and Adaptations
Lessons are planned with adaptive tasks, differentiated equipment, and flexible grouping so that all pupils can access the learning and experience success at their own level. Teachers use targeted support, including individual adjustments and scaffolding challenges, to remove barriers and promote equal opportunities for engagement. We celebrate diverse strengths by valuing personal progress as much as performance, and by creating a positive, supportive environment where pupils feel safe, respected, and confident to take part.
Enrichment and Wider Opportunities
Each year, the school has a sports day which includes all children. Athletic and agility events take part on a local field and children participate in track and field activities. Children compete in competitions and events in the local area for sports such as football, hockey and indoor athletics. There are after-school clubs throughout the year which provide children with opportunities to develop skills and try new activities such as dance, laser-tag and zorbing.
At Holy Trinity CofE (C) Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality PE, sport and physical activity opportunities for all pupils. Our PE and Sport Premium is used to enhance our existing provision, develop staff expertise and provide pupils with a broad range of opportunities to be physically active, develop their skills and enjoy sport.
For the 2025–2026 academic year, Holy Trinity CofE (C) Primary School received £16,260 in PE and Sport Premium funding.
Our monitoring records show a total investment in PE and sport provision of £18,609.46 during the year.
Our investment in PE and sport during 2025–2026 included:
| Area | Investment | Provision |
|---|---|---|
| Continuing Professional Development (CPD) | £584.64 | Peer CPD through weekly sessions at Washlands, supporting staff development and confidence in delivering PE |
| PE equipment and resources | £8,997.82 | PE equipment including balls, rackets, nets, cones, hoops and football kits |
| Bike path | £4,629.00 | Development of an additional resource to support pupils' physical activity |
| PE planning/resources | £395.00 | Primary PE Planning (PPP), supporting high-quality curriculum planning and delivery |
| Extra-curricular provision | £3,145.00 | School-based extra-curricular opportunities, including Magic Mayhem |
| External coaching | £858.00 | Specialist hockey coaching |
| Total investment | £18,609.46 |
Our investment has enabled us to strengthen PE, sport and physical activity across the school.
Investment in new and improved equipment and resources has supported the delivery of a broad and engaging PE curriculum and increased the opportunities available for pupils to be physically active. The development of the bike path provides an additional opportunity for active participation, while investment in equipment ensures pupils have access to appropriate resources across a range of sports and activities.
Extra-curricular provision and specialist coaching have broadened the sporting opportunities available beyond curriculum PE. Funding has also been targeted towards improving opportunities for pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and girls, helping us to promote inclusive participation in physical activity and sport.
Alongside direct provision for pupils, investment in staff CPD and PE planning resources has supported teachers in developing their knowledge, confidence and ability to deliver high-quality PE. This helps to ensure that improvements extend beyond individual activities and contribute to the quality of our ongoing PE curriculum.
By the end of the 2025–2026 academic year, the percentage of our Year 6 pupils meeting the national curriculum swimming and water safety requirements was:
The school reported that its provision had a positive impact on swimming and water safety attainment.
We aim to ensure that the impact of our PE and Sport Premium extends beyond the 2025–2026 academic year.
Investment in staff professional development builds expertise within the school and supports teachers to continue delivering high-quality PE in future years. Our PE planning resources provide a consistent framework for curriculum delivery, while investment in durable PE equipment and facilities, including the bike path, will continue to benefit pupils in future cohorts.
We will continue to build on our extra-curricular and sporting opportunities, consider the needs of different groups of pupils when planning provision, and use participation and attainment information to identify priorities for future development.
For 2026–2027, we have identified continued professional development (CPD) and school sports competitions as areas where further support would be particularly beneficial. These priorities will help us continue to develop staff expertise while increasing opportunities for pupils to participate, compete and enjoy sport.
